Orphan Care Programme
The orphan care programme started as an attempt to provide assistance to families that include orphans. Many of these children stay with relatives that struggle to support their needs along with those of their own immediate family. Currently, over 30 children are supported by providing a monthly supply of food that includes a breakfast porridge, a nutritious drink and an evening soy mince meal.
Far-reaching benefits
Many of these children in the past have been forced to attend school hungry. These meals provide not only the necessary nutritional requirements to meet the daily needs of each child, but it impacts their education too. Research has shown that regular nutritious meals enable children to receive better education as they are more able to concentrate in classes.
Logistics
The meals are purchased from Diva Nutritional Products in Kommetjie and transported to Pinelands for storage, currently at the Pinelands Methodist Church manse. Deliveries to Mokone Primary are made every two weeks, providing an opportunity for volunteers to share the love of Christ by distributing food parcels and teaching the children through stories and games.
Sponsors
After the closure of the Chris Hani Independent School, these orphans were absorbed into Mokone Primary. As a result, the immediate need for sponsors has expanded. More children are accepted into the programme as more sponsors become available.
How can you help?
- Sponsor an orphan: At only R125 per month, you can be assured of making a significant difference to a child's life.
- See the smiles: Volunteers can join the delivery team to take meals to the children at Mokone Primary and interact with the children.
- Logistics: One person with a large vehicle (kombi or bakkie) is needed to transport the boxes of meals from Kommetjie once a month and a store them until delivered to Mokone Primary.
- Administration: One person is required to double-check the overall administration process. This entails ensuring that meals are transported, stored and delivered when required, pairing up sponsors with children, ensuring payments for children are met, and updating programme information. Simple, but crucial for the overall success of the project.
